T O P I C R E V I E WkosmoIt was a great week end at the Reno Air Races, yes it was a little cold and windy, but what a treat. Not only did I get to see beautiful vintage air planes , some incredible racing ( the P51 Mustanges and Grumman Tiger Cat, WOW!!) and aircraft flybys, but it was a real treat to be able to see and talk to Gene Cernan and Neil Armstrong! What great guys, very polite and accommodating. Gene did a book signing and I asked him how his knee was doing, he said it was stiff, but no infection, which is great news. Neil did an award presentation and after I managed to get to shake his hand and get my picture taken with him! What a great end to an already great weekend, something I had always hoped would happen, but never expected, because as fare as I can tell he was unannounced untill he was to do the presentation and even then what are the chances of a hand shake and a picture?! He had a great smile and seemed to be enjoying himself very much. I have a couple of pictures that I could send for the "sightings" posting if people are interested.JakeWhat a way to create a memorable weekend...! Thanks for sharing your story.------------------Jake Schultz - curator,Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home)SpacepsychoVery Cool Story and can you post a pic of you & NA? Did you get to speak to him very long? RaykosmoAs soon as I get back in town (MI), I'm back out in CA, I'll post some pictures of Neil and Neil and I. He was very gracious, but busy with meeting and/or getting his picture taken with other people. I managed to approach him when he wasn't busy and introduced myself and asked him if could shake his hand, he did and I thanked him for the meeting. My wife was not around and she usually takes pictures for me, still hoping that I might get a picture with Neil I asked a young man standing to the side if he would take a picture of Neil and I should the photo opportunity present its self and he said yes hoping to get one himself, I said I would return the favor if possible. Again when Neil wasn't busy I asked if I might get a picture with him, he smiled, but then got asked to meet someone, so I stepped off to the side and waited hoping that my chance had not passed, to my surprise Neil looked for me, walked over to me and asked if I had someone to take our picture, I said yes and pointed to the young man that had my camera, we got in front of a nice old plane, he stood next to me, and I put my hand on his shoulder and the rest is one great event for me. I did thank him for his time and he said thanks. I didn't get to talk to him because he got busy again. I don't know the young mans name that took our picture, but I would like to thank him again and am sorry that Neil got busy and I couldn't return the favor. I hope he gets his special opportunity one day, be patient and it will happen! TomkosmoHere are the pictures of Neil I took at the 2004 Reno Air Races on September 19th. He was a presenter at The Aviation Heritage Trophy competition. The last one is my personal favorite.Tom [This message has been edited by collectSPACE Admin (edited September 28, 2004).]
